Typing Speed Test
Find out how fast you really type. Measure your WPM and accuracy on a timed test, with live feedback on every keystroke. Free, no signup, and it works on phones too.
Click the text above and start typing — the timer starts on your first keystroke.
How to Take the Typing Test
- Pick a test length — 30 seconds for a quick check, 1 minute for the standard score.
- Click the text box and start typing. The timer starts automatically on your first keystroke.
- Correct letters turn green, mistakes turn red. Backspace to fix them if you want the accuracy back.
- When time runs out you get your WPM, accuracy and error count. Hit Try again to beat it.
How Is WPM Calculated?
WPM means words per minute. Because real words vary in length, typing tests define one “word” as five characters, including spaces. This tool reports net WPM, the figure employers and typing certificates use:
Net WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed
Only characters you typed correctly count, so hammering the keyboard randomly will not inflate your score. Accuracy is shown separately as the percentage of your keystrokes that matched the target text.
What Is a Good Typing Speed?
- Under 25 WPM — beginner, usually hunt-and-peck typing.
- 25–40 WPM — average for casual computer users.
- 40–60 WPM — solid touch typing; comfortable for most office jobs.
- 60–80 WPM — fast. This is the range most data entry and admin roles ask for.
- 80–100+ WPM — professional level, typical of transcriptionists and programmers who touch type well.
Accuracy matters more than raw speed. A steady 45 WPM at 98% accuracy beats 70 WPM at 85%, because every error costs more time to fix than it saved.
Tips to Type Faster
- Learn the home row. Rest your fingers on ASDF and JKL; and return to it after every reach.
- Do not look at the keyboard. It feels slower for a week, then much faster forever.
- Prioritise accuracy first. Speed follows accuracy, never the other way round.
- Practise little and often — ten focused minutes a day beats one long session a week.
- Keep a relaxed posture, wrists floating rather than resting, so your fingers can move freely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this typing test free?
Yes, completely. There is no signup, no limit on attempts, and no watermark or payment before you see your result.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Tap the text area and your on-screen keyboard opens. Bear in mind that touch typing on glass is naturally slower than on a physical keyboard.
Do mistakes lower my score?
Yes. Only correctly typed characters count toward WPM, and your accuracy percentage is shown alongside it. You can backspace to correct errors.
Is my typing data stored anywhere?
No. The whole test runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded or saved. Refreshing the page clears everything.
