How to Pick a Random Name
- Paste your names into the box, one per line. Duplicates and blank lines are cleaned up automatically.
- Choose a mode: one winner, several winners, or split everyone into teams.
- Press Pick and watch the draw. The result appears with a short shuffle animation.
- Tick Remove winners if you are drawing several prizes and nobody should win twice.
Is the Draw Actually Random?
Yes. The picker uses your browser’s crypto.getRandomValues() where available — the same cryptographically secure random source used for security keys — instead of the weaker Math.random(). Team splitting uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle, the standard algorithm that gives every possible arrangement an equal chance.
Nothing is weighted, seeded, or biased toward names at the top of the list, and no result is decided before you press the button.
Common Uses
- Giveaways and raffles — draw a winner from a list of entrants fairly and visibly.
- Classrooms — pick who answers next, or split students into project groups without arguments.
- Sports and games — build balanced teams, decide who goes first, or set a play order.
- Work — choose a standup order, assign a rota, or pick a secret santa without anyone feeling singled out.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my list of names uploaded anywhere?
No. The names never leave your browser — there is no server, no account and no logging. Closing the tab erases everything.
Can I stop the same person winning twice?
Yes. Tick “Remove winners from the list after picking” and each winner is taken out of the pool before the next draw.
How does team splitting work?
Everyone is shuffled randomly and then dealt out one by one, like cards. That keeps the teams as even as possible — if the numbers do not divide exactly, the extra people are spread across different teams.
Is there a limit on how many names I can add?
No practical limit. Lists of several thousand names work fine because the draw happens instantly on your own device.
