How to Calculate a Tip

The arithmetic is simple: tip = bill × (percentage ÷ 100). A 20% tip on a 60.00 bill is 12.00, giving a 72.00 total. Splitting between four people is 18.00 each.

The quick mental shortcut for 20%: move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it. For 15%, take that 10% and add half of it again.

How Much Should You Tip?

Tipping norms vary enormously by country, and getting it wrong in either direction is awkward:

  • United States & Canada — 15–20% is standard at restaurants, 20%+ for good service. Tipping is a substantial part of staff income.
  • United Kingdom & Ireland — around 10–12.5%, and often already added as an optional service charge. Check the bill before adding more.
  • Most of Europe — service is usually included; rounding up or adding 5–10% for good service is plenty.
  • Japan, South Korea & China — tipping is not customary and can even cause offence.
  • Australia & New Zealand — not expected; 10% is a genuine compliment.

Tip on the Pre-Tax or Post-Tax Total?

Strictly, tipping is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax is not part of the service. In practice most people tip on the total because it is easier, and on a typical bill the difference is small. If you want to be precise, enter the pre-tax subtotal as the bill amount and add the tax yourself.

Splitting Awkward Bills

Dividing evenly rarely lands on a clean number, so the rounding options help: rounding each person up guarantees the total is covered and usually leaves a slightly larger tip, which is the socially safe direction to err. Rounding the total instead keeps the tip closer to your chosen percentage. The effective tip rate updates so you always see what you are actually leaving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work with any currency?

Yes. The maths is identical whatever the currency, so enter the numbers as they appear on your bill. No symbol is assumed.

What if a service charge is already included?

Then no further tip is expected. If you still want to add something, use a smaller percentage such as 5% on top, or simply round the total up.

Why is the effective tip rate different from what I chose?

Because rounding changes the amount actually paid. If you round each person up, the real tip ends up slightly higher than your chosen percentage, and that figure shows you by how much.
