The Formula
Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight. Example: you have 78%, the final is worth 30%, you want 85% → you need (85 − 78×0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 101.3% — time to negotiate extra credit, or adjust the target!
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I need more than 100%?
Your target isn’t reachable through the final alone. Check for extra credit, resubmissions, or set a realistic target and protect your GPA elsewhere.
Where do I find the final’s weight?
In your course syllabus — look for the grading breakdown (e.g. “Final exam: 30%”).
My course uses points, not percentages.
Convert first: your points so far ÷ points possible so far × 100 = current %; the final’s points ÷ total course points × 100 = its weight.
